History

On November 10, 1975, the 26,000-ton ore carrier named the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the radar screen of the Arthur M. Anderson. The sinking of the carrier has caused considerable stir and controversy over many years. Just recently, a dive ship from the Woods Hole Institute in Massachusetts sent a dive probe to the 610-foot grave of the Edmund Fitz. Remarkably, the ship is preserved as if it were still 1975. The site is considered the grave of the 29 men who went down with their ship. Over the years, Gordon Lightfoot has kept the memory of the men and the wreck alive through his song, The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, an eerie ballad of that fateful night in November.

The Race

The Race, The Edmund Fitzgerald 100K has become as famous as its namesake has. Since 1982, the event has seen the greatest runners in the World tackle the challenging point to point course. The World Cup was held on this course in 1990 where 17 counties from all over the World sent teams of solo runners to compete for the gold.

The team event was added in 1983 when it became clear that it needed a critical mass of participants to support a 100K point to point event. To this day, the team relay has become one of the most popular fall events in the upper Midwest. The team competition can vary from intense to casual but everyone has a lot of fun.

The event is produced by ALARC, the Active Life and Running Club (formerly the American Lung Association Running Club). A tremendous staff of volunteers and supportive communities along the race course supports it. Since 1982, Bill Wenmark and his staff have managed the complexity of multiple team starts, logistics and staffing necessary to produce a point to point 62 mile race course for solo, two person, and multi-member teams.

UPDATES

Unfortunately, the 2007 Edmund Fitzgerald 100K Road Race has been cancelled.  Due economics and changes in the sport of running, the race is being cancelled after 26 successful years.  The press release is available here.  A letter to the teams and solos from Bill Wenmark is available here.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

9/30/07 - Note from Dennis and Debbie Fredrickson, Thunder Bay Runners
With the bad new that the Fitz is cancelled this year (lets hope it is just for this year!), we went out this morning to map out a 2007 route.  It is a very simple route which will facilitate spectators, and new teams.

The event starts and ends at the Fitness Centre.  Leave the Fitness Centre along the outer road, then proceed south on the bike path (parallel to Ford St). Cross the Neebing river, turn right and follow the bike path to James St.  South on James St, continue over the Kam River to City Road.  City Road to Mountain Road to the NorWester Hotel.  South on Loch Lomand Road to Trendiak Road to Little Norway Rd;  north to Highway 61.  Highway 61 south for approximately 28K.  The turnaround point is 1.1 Km past Cloud Bay  store.  You will see a sign indicating 2km to a passing lane.  The sign is the turnaround point (ie 50K).

Solo start time is 5:00 am or later if you wish.  Teams start whenever they want;  The goal is to have everyone end at about the same time- 4:00.

Post race party to be determined, but perhaps the Neebing Hotel at 7:30?

This a very no frills, but many thrills event.  No registration, no fee, no shirt, no aid stations;  bring your own handler.  It is not an official event, but rather a bunch of running friends looking for a long day of running fun.
